#2616 DIAGNOSTIC VALUE OF THE HANDGRIP STRENGTH IN DETECTING PROTEIN-ENERGY WASTING AMONG HEMODIALYSIS PATIENTS AT NATIONAL KIDNEY AND TRANSPLANT INSTITUTE

Abstract Background and Aims Protein energy wasting (PEW) is a syndrome of adverse nutritional catabolic changes common among chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Handgrip strength (HGS) was one the methods screening PEW mentioned in Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative guidelines. However, only few studies determined validity HGS detecting maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) The study aimed to determine diagnostic MHD patients tertiary government hospital, with following specific objectives: prevalence patients, compare demographic clinical profile by status, identify optimal cut-off point pre- post-HD sessions sex, value parameters sex terms discriminative ability, accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive negative value. Method Participants included this cross-sectional are randomly selected undergoing National Transplant Institute (NKTI) from September October, 2022. Diagnosis based on Malnutrition Inflammation Score (MIS) ≥5. measured using dynamometer post-dialysis sessions. Results A total 143 were study, 53% diagnosed PEW. Pre-HD have acceptable ability Area Under Curve >0.70 regardless patient sex. In males, post-hemodialysis <17.9 showed 72% sensitivity 71% specificity Meanwhile, pre-hemodialysis <18.6 females 83% 65% Conclusion NKTI. performance found be both males females. While measures can used pre-HD recommended for can, therefore, as non-expensive, accurate objective assessment tool External validation proposed values still recommended.
